How Millennial Parents Will Use Technology In Parenting

The millennial parent 🙋🏻♀️
Millennials are the first true digital native generation. Not only that, we are also now the largest generation in US history. Over 1 million millennials are becoming mothers each year and over 50% are working moms. We have the shared experience of coming of age in rough economic times, and are well-educated. And given the circumstances, most of us have entered parenthood later in life compared to our baby boomer parents.
Millennials growing up in the digital age 🤳🏻
Technology has played a big role in shaping who we are. In addition to the explosion of social media, technology has transformed many other aspects of our lives. Here are some examples:
- Social media: Facebook, Instragram, TikTok
- Retail: Amazon, Stitchfix, Rent the Runway
- Transportation: Uber, Lyft
- Lodging: Airbnb, VRBO
- Grocery shopping and meals: Doordash, Instacart, Postmates
- Entertainment: Spotify, YouTube, Netflix
- Mindfulness: Calm, Headspace
The list goes on.
In addition to our personal lives, technology has also impacted the way we work. This trend has only accelerated since the pandemic. We now use technology in the workplace for communication, collaboration, and project management, among other things. These tools enhance productivity and enable a hybrid (i.e., flexible) work culture. Technology has afforded us this flexibility and has helped many working parents in households across the country.
Parenting: The most important job 👨👩👧👦
This new era of flexible work structures has been a huge unlock on the home front, especially for millennial moms. This new work structure also equals a new parenting structure, including co-parenting households. For the first time, parents have been able to pursue work and family life in tandem. In fact, since April 2023, the employment rate among women ages 25-54 has topped 75% - and for college-educated mothers of children under 10, that figure is almost 80%. However, return-to-office mandates could halt or reverse this progress while derailing the careers these working moms need and want.
The rise of the digital age has given us access to essentially anything from the palm of our hand, and given us the ability to interact with each other on a global scale. With nearly limitless access to information and a multitude of different offerings, technology has created cheaper and more convenient options for many things we experience or purchase. Yet, when it comes to perhaps the most important and arguably the most challenging job of all, being a parent, there is no dedicated app. When you think about it, most of our time as parents outside the workplace is spent with our kids and all that goes along with that. For parents with kids in K-12, helping them along their learning journey is a key component.
The problem 🤮
“How do I juggle work and family?” This is a question many parents, especially working moms, struggle with, often with no answer. Millennial parents are left aimlessly grinding through each week, reacting to last-minute surprises. As our households grow, so does the stress. Need a family calendar app anyone? Every family is unique, but the explosion of tools and apps is often a one-size-fits-all solution and not designed for parents. Take our kid’s schools as an example. Each month, the average number of digital tools used in each US school district is 1,379…that’s 45 different apps per day! Despite this increase in tools and data, our kids are still struggling or are bored. And this doesn’t include all of the other components that go along with raising a family. Healthcare, tutors, sports, schedules, weekly meal planning, chores, communication & collaboration, childcare, etc. It’s no wonder parents can’t keep track of all the information and logins.
Why can’t there be ONE app that helps you manage and tackle your household’s weeks, maintains all your household’s digital records and forms, including staying up to date on your child’s learning progress in real-time, and provides the support and personalized learning resources to ensure your kids remain thriving in your time of need. We have workplace productivity tools, so why not a household productivity tool?
